SYNOPSIS 

Jess, feeling lonely and unsuccessful in dating, sits down to play a game of chess with her date, James. She doesn't know the rules, inventing her own fantastical world for the pieces. This creates a comedic contrast with James, who attempts to play by the real rules.

Jess's frustration with dating, which she likens to a predetermined and suffocating game of chess, boils over. She throws the board in frustration and declares her intention to give up on dating. James, however, returns with a custom-made "red wine shandy" she had requested as a joke, showing he was paying attention.

They sit together to put the pieces back on the board, and in a final act of rebellion against the rules and conventions, Jess drinks the disgusting potion and then vomits all over the board. Despite this chaotic moment, they continue to talk, suggesting a connection beyond the "rules" of a first date.
